5 Tips for Taking Your New Dog Home

We want to help to make sure your precious pup does not escape. We are here to help, but here are a few tips that may help prevent us from being needed.

            1. Bringing your dog home.

This is the most stressful time for your new pup. Before you collect your dog, consider if you are going to be using a harness or a Martingale collar (or both if it’s skittish!). Make sure you take it with you when you collect your dog.

Get a tag made with your name and phone number on it to attach to your new dog’s collar.

Take a picture of your dog as soon as you can.

In your car use a crate or have another leash already attached to a headrest or handle so you can clip it without letting go of the walking leash. This will stop your dog jumping out as soon as you open the door.

          2. Your dog needs to adjust to a new place to live.

Obviously, you need to check your yard for places your new dog may be able to escape, but have you considered having a lock on your gate too?

It may take a while for your new dog to start to bond with you, so we suggest that you avoid taking your dog for walks and make sure you are outside with them at all times (on leash) for the first few weeks.

          3. In your home.

When you open your front door, your dog could be at your side and quickly escape. Use a leash, crate, dog gate or put your new dog in a separate room first to prevent this from happening.

          4. First walks.

A new dog can panic at sudden noises or just being in a new situation. Make sure you use a well-fitted collar or harness (or both).  A Martingale collar gives control without choking (when pulled tight the 2 rings on the collar should not touch but should be approximately 1 inch apart).  Make sure you hold the leash correctly (hand through the loop) to avoid your dog pulling suddenly and escaping.

          5. Get a license.

A license is not only essential, it’s the law.

If you live in the city of Winnipeg, you can get your dog’s license from the Winnipeg Animal Services agency located at 1057 Logan Avenue or online at https://payment.csfm.com/payments/winnipeg/form/index.php. You can also call get your license by calling 311.

If your dog is lost, your license will ensure that Winnipeg Animal Services has a way to return your dog to you. For more information on licensing, visit the Winnipeg Animal Services website. https://www.winnipeg.ca/cms/animal/licenses/faq.stm#1
